At Chiha Portraits, we are most often asked for family portrait outfit ideas. This is why we’ve compiled our favorite outfits over the years to serve as visual inspiration.

Your family portraits are a special moment. This is a great opportunity to be intentional with your outfit choices and to dress nicely.

Dressing nicely has more than one definition. It can look like many things. We’ve included in this guide our favorite outfits ideas for families who would like to dress up and be more formal, and also favorite outfits for families who would like to dress more casual, but still look good.

OUR TOP TIPS

  1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT COLORS
    • Make sure the colors are complimentary. This is the biggest mistake we see. And don’t choose too many colors. Don’t mix bright colors with soft subdued colors. Any color is great, but it’s important to think about which colors look best on your complexion. Stay away from colors that drain you out.

  2. BRING OUTFIT OPTIONS
    • If you’re not sure what the right outfit is, bring options and we will help you choose the right option in person at your photoshoot.

  3. MAKE SURE YOUR SHOES MATCH YOUR OUTFIT
    • We will capture full body portraits and also close up portraits.

  4. DON’T FORGET A BELT
    • If you’re wearing khakis or dress pants, don’t forget a belt.

  5. CHOOSE PATTERNS CAREFULLY
    • Make sure your patterns are not too distracting. Simple patterns are good.

  6. STAY AWAY FROM THESE STYLES
    • We recommend staying away from revealing crop tops, ripped jeans, overly baggy clothing, and lounge wear/athletic wear.

  7. LAYER UP DURING THESE MONTHS
    • From mid-October to early June, we recommend you dressing warmer than you may think you need to. When you walk around outdoors for 45 minutes, it will feel colder outside than you expected it to. Our tip is to wear an extra layer that can hide UNDER your favorite outfit. Our next tip is to wear a chic coat or jacket that you can take photos in for colder months. Try to avoid casual jackets and coats.
